An Australian Nobel Prize-winning novelist and a Greek Army officer become lifelong lovers and run a farm outside of Sydney. What’s not to love?!

Australian author Patrick White met George “Manoly” Lascaris in the 1940s and the two were a couple for the rest of their lives. After a number of years spent living on a farm outside of Sydney, the couple moved into White’s city home, and it was here where his career as a writer and dramatist took off.

White would go on to write 12 novels and 11 plays, and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1973. Lascaris is credited with being his inspiration and driving force. But being the times that they were, the men’s relationship was largely kept secret, with Lascaris frequently referred to as White’s “housekeeper. ”

It was not until his autobiography in 1981 (Flaws in the Glass) that White publicly acknowledged Lascaris as his partner. He died nine years later, with Lascaris surviving him until his death in 2003.

Upon Lascaris’ death, White biographer David Marr wrote, “Everyone loved Manoly. He was courtly, intuitive and gentle. He protected people from White's outbursts of fury while remaining, at heart, absolutely loyal to his lover. 'There must be one person in the world Patrick can trust absolutely'.”

Behind some great men there are other great men, and the story of these men deserves to be told.

Last week, virtually no one was surprised when thinly-veiled hate group OneMillionMoms.com called for the firing of Ellen DeGeneres as the spokeswoman for JC Penney due to the fact that DeGeneres is an “open homosexual.”

Ellen is also host of the popular TV chat show that bears her name, and it is likely JC Penney seriously considered the whole “lesbian” thing before they brought her on as host. While the star does not hide her sexuality nor her lengthy relationship with Arrested Development star Portia De Rossi, neither is she overtly political in tone and hardly believable as a soldier in the “culture war” OneMillionMoms claims is ongoing.

Predictably, the group has wrapped their bigotry up in “family values,” with the implication that perhaps one of the most positive personalities on television today is somehow damaging to the morality of viewers. But Ellen has spoken out, admitting that while she rarely addresses such issues on her show, it was important to her to thank JC Penney for not cowing to the (probably very weak) pressure to “fire” her.
Ellen segued in to the topic by mentioning the ruling that Prop 8 in California was unconstitutional, and she added:
“I’m sure the people who oppose it will try to appeal it, but it’s a step in the right direction. So I’m happy… But there’s a group called One Million Moms that isn’t happy about it. And normally, I try not to pay attention to my haters- but this time I’d like to talk about it, because my haters are my motivators.”

Ellen continued:
“This organization doesn’t think I should be the spokesperson because I’m gay. They wanted to get me fired, and I’m proud and happy to say that JC Penney stuck by their decision to make me their spokesperson. Which is great news for me because I also need some new crew socks. I’m really going to clean up with this discount… After JCPenney didn’t back down, I thought the story would be over… it did not go away. The group has posted a message on their Facebook page.”

DeGeneres then noted for the crowd that “being gay or pro-gay isn’t a bandwagon. You don’t get a free ride anywhere. There’s no music. And occasionally we’ll sing ‘We Are Family’ but that’s about it,” before thanking fans and the retailer for sticking by her. (She also added that “not that there’s anyone counting, but for a group that calls themselves a Million Moms, they only have 40,000 members on their page.

So they’re rounding up to the nearest million and I get that.”) Ellen says:

“I usually don’t talk about stuff like this on my show, but I really want to thank everyone who is supporting me. Here are the values I stand for. I stand for honesty, equality, kindness, compassion, treating people the way you’d want to be treated and helping those in need. To me, those are traditional values. That’s what I stand for… I also believe in dance.”

was an American film actor. He is a cultural icon, best embodied in the title of his most celebrated film, Rebel Without a Cause (1955), in which he starred as troubled Los Angeles teenager Jim Stark. The other two roles that defined his stardom were as loner Cal Trask in East of Eden (1955), and as the surly ranch hand, Jett Rink, in Giant (1956). Dean's enduring fame and popularity rests on his performances in only these three films, all leading roles. His premature death in a car crash cemented his legendary status.

Actress Liz Sheridan claims that she and Dean had a short affair in New York. In her memoir, she also states that Dean was having a sexual involvement with director Rogers Brackett, and describes her negative response to this situation. However, again Bast is skeptical whether this was a true love affair and says Dean and Sheridan did not spend much time together.

Dean avoided the draft by registering as a homosexual, then classified by the US government as a mental disorder. When questioned about his orientation, he is reported to have said:

In 1932, Lila Kedrova joined the Moscow Art Theatre touring company. Then her film career began, mostly in French films, until her first English appearance in 1964 as Mme Hortense (the tender Bubulina) in Zorba the Greek. Her performance won her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. She then went on to play a series of eccentric or batty ladies in several Hollywood films.

In 1983, she reprised her role as Mme Hortense on Broadway in the musical version of Zorba the Greek, winning both a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical and a Drama Desk Award in the process. In 1989 she played Madame Armfeldt in the London revival of A Little Night Music.

In 2000, Lila Kedrova died at her summer home in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, of pneumonia, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

A university professor in China has estimated that 16 million women in the world’s most populous country are married to gays.

Professor Zhang Bei-chuan of Qingdao University says the huge number of women – equivalent to the population of the Netherlands – who have tied the knot with gay men are struggling to cope.

Speaking to state-run China Daily, the academic said as many as 90% of gay Chinese men marry to conform with social norms.

As of 2010, China had a population of more than 1.3 billion.

According to Professor Zhang Bei-chuan’s estimate, roughly 3% of the country’s adult population is in a gay-straight marriage.

The potentially damaging effect of such marriages was highlighted by 29-year-old Xiao Yao, who was married to a gay man and now runs a support website for wives in similar situations.

She said:
“Most gay men’s wives I’ve known are silently suffering at the hands of husbands who could never love them, and like me, some even got abused by husbands who were also under great pressure.

The website makes them feel they’re not alone and empowers them to make the right choices.”

The number was queried by one of the gay men questioned by the paper, but others said they would consider marrying a woman.

Wang, 27, told the publication he would consider marrying a lesbian if he were forced to wed a woman.

Xiao Dong, a gay man involved in HIV/AIDS prevention efforts, said it was an “unsubstantiated” and “pointless” investigation.

Homosexuality was decriminalised in the People’s Republic in 1997 and its status as a mental disorder revoked in 2001, but legal protection for gays is minimal with no non-discrimination or equal marriage rights and strong censorship rules

Pears once noted, “I think the key to his music lies in his moral point of view combined with his craving for lost innocence brought on by his increasing disillusionment with man.”

But while Zamora participated in the show in order to raise HIV awareness, he also unexpectedly found love under the harsh television lights. Zamora had been friends with fellow activist Sean Sasser for years, but when they wound up living in the same city, their relationship blossomed into something more.

Though at first Zamora requested that he be allowed to date Sasser off-camera (which the producers granted), eventually their relationship became solid enough to withstand the scrutiny of reality television and the two brought their romance into the spotlight.

The reactions of the various roommates were as fascinating as the love story itself, with straight roommate Judd Winick coming to Zamora’s side as his closest confidant in the house. David “Puck” Rainey, on the other hand, was downright hostile to Zamora, and the loftmates responded by evicting Puck from the house in order to lessen the strain on Pedro’s system.

In a television first, Pedro and Sean exchanged vows in a commitment ceremony on the show. But sadly, following filming, Zamora’s health deteriorated rapidly. He died on November 11th, a day after the last Real World episode aired.

Pedro Zamora and Sean Sasser are historic figures in terms of visibility of all kinds (gay, interracial, HIV), and their story is romantic, bittersweet, and inspiring. It’s criminal that it hasn’t been adapted into a feature film.

A story is coming out of China about a strange young boy who has the eyes of a cat, literally!

Doctors in Dahua, southern China have recently examined young Nong Youhui after his father noticed his son’s eyes glowing in the dark.

The Physician’s discovered that not only does he have eyes similar to a cat, but they work much like that of a nocturnal animal as well.

Apparently the young lad can see clearly in the dark and read a book in the black of night as if it were broad daylight.

There is a down side to it all, as Nong’s super-sight is due to a genetic condition known as leucoderma and could become a serious problem.

According to specialists of the hospital in Dahua, south of China, it is a genetic condition that leaves less protection for the eyes and make them more sensitive to light.

Nong Youhui rage with his superpowers. His parents are still concerned about the case.

It all started with a visit to the doctor when the child’s father appeared to review the child’s eyes.

The problem was that his father noticed the boy’s eyes glowed in the dark like flashlights.

According to medical examinations that made him able to determine that the boy easily readable in complete darkness and without the aid of any light. Moreover, he can see as clearly as if it were daylight.

Experts believe that the child was born with a rare condition that leaves less protection for your eyes and make them more sensitive to light.

On the other hand, the father of the boy nicknamed “Cat-Boy” (boy cat) warned that some time ago the doctors said that the eyes of his son leave to shine, to become black like most Chinese.

Of course, this story was reported as early as 2009, but the amazing aspect of it all is that Young Nong Youhui is still going strong with this genetic condition and his eyes have not turned dark.

Las relaciones entre Pascasio y Andresito, sin embargo, serán salvadas por el amor. El narrador expone con claridad la sorpresa y aceptación por parte del héroe de sus nuevos sentimientos:

Aquello no era locura; algo ocurría en su cerebro que se extendía por todo su ser y lo descentraba; algo que no lo dejaba pensar serenamente a pesar de los esfuerzos que hacía por recobrar la calma. Pero ese algo no era locura. Su agitación no era la de un hombre que ha perdido la razón. La historia se irá complicando con el brete y la intriga de los confinados. El héroe será arrastrado finalmente al asesinato y la mutilación, pero otra vez la radicalidad (expresionista) del narrador nos afirmará la intención del deseo homoerótico de sobrevivir por encima de las circunstancias adversas.

Montenegro, quien junto al editor de una revista de la época, sufrió unas horas de arrestro policial, por publicar un fragmento de su novela, condicionó la lectura del texto proponiendo acercarse a él como a una denuncia del régimen penitenciario. El escritor estuvo condenado por cometer un crimen. La crítica prefirió escucharlo y hasta hoy su novela ha sido leída como un testimonio autobiográfico.

No obstante, HOMBRES SIN MUJER es la primera ficción cubana que hace visible, también de manera abierta, aunque igualmente en su sentido trágico, algunas de la tipologías homosexuales más comunes al imaginario cultural, empezando por el propio espacio carcelario, donde la situación de encierro fija las posibilidades de los comportamientos perversos.

According to a new Harris poll, Johnny Depp is ranked as America's Favorite Actor for the second year in a row. Second place is a tie between Denzel Washington and Clint Eastwood, while fourth place goes to Tom Hanks.
